The Cask of Amontillado Literary Elements

Irony (review) Verbal Irony – a character says one thing but means another Ex: Fortunato : “I shall not die of a cough” …Fortunato: “I drink to the buried that repose around us.” Montresor: “And I to your long life.” Dramatic Irony: When audience knows what will happen before a character knows. Ex: Fortunato does not know that he will soon die.

Mood (review) The feeling/atmosphere created for the readers What is the mood of “The Cask of Amontillado?” Consider descriptive passages: “Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead , in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris” (212).

Imagery (review) Description that appeals to the senses – sight, smell, taste, sound, touch “We had passed through walls of piled bones…into the inmost recesses of the catacombs…The drops of moisture trickle among the bones” (211).
