Do Now, November 9 th : Think of words that have the root “foli" in them, it could be the beginning, middle or end. What does the root mean? hint: foliage

trefoil (n) A three leaf plant. The adidas logo contains a trefoil, or three leaf plant.

foliage (n) All the leaves of a plant. In the Autumn, foliage of the leaves falls to the ground in a mix of red, yellow, and brown.

folic acid (n) A vitamin contained in leafy green vegetables Folic acid is an important nutrient for the body and helps to keep the body healthy.

folio (n) Pages, leaves of a manuscript. When Marsha discovered the missing folio of Edgar Allen Poe’s last work, she quickly became very wealthy.

unifoliate (adj) Having one leaf. The unifoliate plant contained only one leaf, but made a nice bed for the caterpillar to rest on.

defoliant (n) A chemical which causes green leaves to drop off. The rival school used defoliant on all our trees so now our campus looks like winter in the middle of July.

bifoliate (adj.) Having two leaves. My orchid is a bifoliate house plant that looks Siamese twins joined at the stem! Having two leaves.

foil (noun) A thin sheet (leaf) of metal or a character who contrasts with another character. My grandpa used to wrap his old T.V. antenna in foil to get better reception. In Dunk, Anthony and Jason would be considered foil characters because one is malevolent, while the other is not.

discriminate(v) If you discriminate between two things, you see or perceive a difference between them and treat them differently based on that difference. Discriminate between fiction and nonfiction by finding out whether a not a book is made up.

distinguish(v) If you distinguish something, you recognize it for a specific reason. When you listen to a debate, distinguish between facts, opinions, and reasoned judgment.
