Some words are spelled the same but have different definitions. These are called multiple-meaning words. Use context clues and think about the sentence’s meaning to see which definition fits. Multiple-Meaning Words

4 Sail Sail can refer to moving across the water.
I like to watch the boats sail across the water. Sail can also refer to the large cloth part of a boat. The sail on my grandpa’s boat was purple, green, and yellow.

5 Catch Catch can refer to getting to a place just in time.
Hurry up! We have a train to catch. Catch can also refer to stopping something with your hand. The best part of fishing is when I catch a fish!

6 Cut Cut can refer to splitting things apart.
Be careful when you cut with those scissors. They are sharp! Cut can also refer to an injury to the skin. Kevin fell down and cut his hand.

7 Play Play can also refer to a show.
The actors in the play were amazing! Play can refer to when you do something for fun. I love recess because we get to go and play.

8 Fall Fall can refer to the season between summer and winter.
Thanksgiving is in the fall. Fall can also refer to dropping down to the ground. The girl was careful with the book. She didn’t want it to fall off her head!

9 Fan Fan can refer to an object that creates a breeze to cool someone off. Make sure to bring your fan. It is really hot outside! Fan can also refer to a person who really likes a team, person, place, or thing. I am a fan of jazz music. I love to listen to it on the radio.
