Club Overview - Day 2 (Get Excited!!!!!)

Agenda I. Log into Canvas II. Choosing a Level III. Learning and Creating IV. Closing

Canvas

What is Canvas? ● Canvas contains all the curriculum and resources that you will use during the club ● Canvas keeps track of the projects you can create under “modules”, groups of projects with the same theme/learning objectives ● Canvas allows for submission of code and URLs for each assignment, and will automatically grade pre/post tests so you immediately know what you got right! ● Canvas allows for club discussion on code and important topics! ● Canvas allows for real-time collaboration between club members via Google Docs!

Canvas Log into Canvas ● If you have sent in the parental consent form before today: ○ go to my website at ○ Click on “click here to access the curriculum” ○ log in! ■ username: your address ■ password: ○ create a Canvas account by clicking “Need a Canvas account?” and then selecting Student

Choosing a Level

Levels Level Descriptions: Level 1: ● New to coding! ● Step-by-step instructions ● Uses Python Level 2: ● Some experience ● Explanatory resources provided ● Uses Javascript (also HTML, CSS, JQuery) Level 3: ● You feel comfortable building a project on your own

Levels Choosing a level 1. Choose the level you think applies to you 2. Take the pre-survey for that level ● The surveys are supposed to be really hard! ● You’re supposed to not know the answers yet! ● Feel free to leave questions blank, or say “I don’t know!” 1. If you get a 70-90% consider starting at the next level instead. The questions are supposed to be HARD! 2. Once you’ve selected a level, choose a module in Canvas from that level and start working

Coding!

1. Look at the module titles in Canvas. a. Level 1: - do the modules starting with the first one b. Level 2 - Choose modules that interest you, but realize Video Games uses what you learned in Graphics, and Web Development uses what you learn in Video games c. Level 3 - Choose a project that interests you 1. HAVE FUN!!!!

Coding! Pre/Post Surveys Each module will have a pre and post survey. Girls Who Code wants to make its curriculum as awesome as possible. These surveys help Girls Who Code figure out if the curriculum teaches what it wants to teach. They are NOT a reflection on you! Feel free to send Girls Who Code feedback! The pretests are supposed to be HARD. If it’s not, you can consider skipping the module.

Coding! When you have a question 1. Spend 10 minutes on a given problem. 2. Check the instructions again! 3. Check if the module provides any hints! 4. Google the problem. 5. Ask someone else in the club. 6. Ask another person in the club. 7. Ask me for help!

Closing

Closing! Each day, we will write something: ● that we’re grateful for in the club ● new we’ve learned ● awesome we saw another club member doing Then, you can read what other people wrote!

Closing! Next Time... ● I’ll introduce an awesome woman in tech! ● We’ll get to keep working on more projects!
