Desert Biome By. Josh Brown and Mary-Laurel Parks

Deserts cover about one fifth of earths surface. They occur where rainfall is less than 50 cm/yr. Facts

Characteristics Soil type is sandy coarse sand, little organic matter, high amounts of rocks and minerals. 3 types – a hot desert climate (BWh) – a cold desert climate (BWk) – a mild desert climate (BWh/BWn)

Sahara desert tourist spot They take a tour across the desert on a camel Or they can range even farther in a 4WD expedition. Travelers prefer to sleep outdoors beneath the clearest show of stars on earth.

Animal Species Camels Snakes Scorpio Lizards Chameleons

Animals adaptations They have to learn how to survive with lack of water. Some animals, like kangaroos, rats and lizards, live in burrows which do not get too hot or too cold.

Food Web Larger desert animals try to stay in shady areas during the day. They obtain water from the food they eat.

Competition Animals compete for food, water, and space to live and breed in. Plants compete for water and minerals in the soil.

Plants in the desert There are a lot of different plants in the desert but all of them have to survive with very little water. Cactus Agavaceae Desert Rose

Plant adaptations Three main adaptive strategies: succulence, drought tolerance and drought avoidance. Succulent plants store water in fleshy leaves, stems or roots. Drought tolerance (or drought dormancy) refers to a plant's ability to withstand desiccation without dying. Annual plants escape unfavorable conditions by not existing.

Holes (The Movie) Xxo They haven't seen rain in so long they were so happy. Filmed in the Mojave Desert in California.

Human impact Southern California's deserts have been affected by the activities of humans Military training exercises, and air pollution are some ways humans impact the desert. Many plant and animal species are protected by law Now cacti cannot be taken from the wild

Everyone get in groups of 4 and discuss what 3 things you would take if they had to survive in the desert for a month. You have 10 minutes !

Short Answer quiz! Take out a pencil and a piece of paper.

1.Deserts cover about how much of the earth’s surface? 2.Travelers to the Sahara desert prefer to sleep where? 3.Where do some animals like kangaroos, rats, and lizards live? 4.Where do larger desert animals try to stay during the day? 5.Name one of the two animals at the top of the food web.

6.How many type of deserts are there? 7.Where was the movie Holes filmed? 8.Animals have to learn to survive with the lack of what? 9.Deserts occur where there is less then how many cm of water of year? 10. How do animals obtain water?
