LINKING THE EUROPEAN FAMILY - LALÍN, LOCALITY 7 LALÍN COUNCIL WHERE EXACTLY?: right in the middle of Galicia, near SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA. AREA: 326 km 2. POPULATION: , half in the town, half in one of the 52 rural little areas. Lots of people were immigrants to South America (beginning of the century) and Europe (France & Germany mainly). Now the reverse situation: Up to 500 foreign people live in Lalin.

LINKING THE EUROPEAN FAMILY - LALÍN, LOCALITY 8 THE ORIGINS. The word Lalín comes from "Lalino", a man sent here by the Count of Deza to found a farm where, later, in 980, a monastery was built: San Martiño de Lalín de Arriba. Earlier before, the area had already been populated. Witness are the numerous remains of the so-called “castrexa” culture. Still in 1913 there were only about 300 people living in the town. Later came years when development and progress turned Lalin into the most important middle-size town in the interior of Galicia.

LINKING THE EUROPEAN FAMILY - LALÍN, LOCALITY 21 ECONOMIC INFO Labour force is traditionally divided, in terms of professions, in three economic sectors: the first one based on getting food and raw materials (agriculture, stockbreeding & fishing); the second one, involving the production of goods for consumption (industry & construction); and the third one, including the rest of activities: commercialization and services. Year-2000 figures show that 17,9% of Galician employed people work in the first sector, 29,6% in the second and 52,4% in the third, the same as in other Spanish regions. In Lalin, the first sector (farming) is the most powerful, something logical in a rural council. However, at present, other activities such as building and textile industries, wood processing, metal work, shops and other services are becoming more and more important.
