INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN QUESTIONS Three components of effective classroom pedagogy: Effective instructional strategies Effective management strategies Effective classroom curriculum design strategies

1.Distinguish between learning goals and learning activities. 2.Use formative assessments and rubrics to track student progress – chart progress. 3.Recognize and acknowledge students’ knowledge gains. QUESTION #1 What will I do to: establish and communicate learning goals, track student progress, and celebrate success?

What will I do to: Help students effectively interact with new knowledge? 1.Identify critical –input experiences Preview information divide students into small groups organize into small chunks to describe, discuss, and make predictions 2. Ask questions 3. Record conclusions 4.Student reflections QUESTION #2

What will I do to: Help students practice and deepen their understanding of new knowledge? 1.Distinguish between declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge. 2.Provide practice for procedural knowledge and activities such as analysis and comparison for declarative knowledge. 3.Both types of knowledge are supported by homework, cooperative groups, and revision activities. QUESTION #3

What will I do to: help students generate and test hypotheses about new knowledge? 1. Incorporate experimental inquiry, problem solving, decision making, and investigation into lesson plans to allow students to examine their thinking regarding knowledge being learned. QUESTION #4

What will I do: engage students? 1. Plan lessons to promote physical movement, challenge students’ thinking, and stimulate their attention to the task at hand. QUESTION #5

What will I do to: Establish or maintain classroom rules and procedures? 1.Organize the physical environment. 2.Identify a small set of rules/procedures 3.Interact with students about rules and procedures. 4.Review rules and procedures. 5.Use classroom meetings. QUESTION #6

What will I do to: Recognize and acknowledge adherence and lack of adherence to classroom rules and procedures? 1. Balanced approach- recognize both positive and negative behavior. 2. Use verbal and non- verbal acknowledgment of positive behavior. 3. Use tangible recognition of positive behavior. 4. Use direct cost. QUESTION #7

What will I do to: establish and maintain effective relationships with students? 1.Think of teacher behaviors as opposed to teacher thoughts or feelings. 2.Be aware of actions that incorporate two critical components of effective relationship: behaviors that communicate an appropriate level of concern and cooperation and behaviors that communicate an appropriate level of guidance and control QUESTION #8

What will I do to: Communicate high expectations for all learners. 1.Develop expectations for students success in class. 2.Avoid treating low-expectancy students differently than high expectancy students. QUESTION #9

What will I do to : develop effective lessons organized into a cohesive unit? 1.Identify the focus of a unit. 2.Plan for lesson segments that are routine in every lesson. 3.Plan for content specific lesson segments. 4.Plan for actions that must be taken on the spot. 5.Develop flexible draft of a unit of study.
