Presentation transcript:

What Happened? On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City. They crashed airplanes into the buildings. The explosions caused so much damage that both buildings soon caught fire and collapsed. A third airplane was crashed into the Pentagon, an important government building. These attacks were done on purpose.

Why Did This Happen? A terrorist is someone who uses fear, or terror, to scare other people – often other countries – because they are angry or want change. The men who did this terrible crime were angry at our government. They wanted to punish the United States. They believed violence would be the best way to express their anger. What could have been a better way to solve their problems?

Who Was Involved? Many people were hurt or killed on this day. Many were members of the New York City police and fire departments, who risked their lives to save others in the buildings. Many of these men and women died to save others. We consider these men and women as heroes. We call the event “9/11” because of the date… …isn’t it interesting that 911 is also the number to call in an emergency?

Why Do We Remember 9/11? It is important to remember days like this, because it helps us deal with feelings like fear and grief. We remember the sacrifices of men and women, like firefighters and police, whose job it is to protect us. We honor those who have died, especially those who might have been friends or family. Sometimes we have a moment of silence—a time to think, to reflect, and for some people, to pray. We are reminded to protect and care for each other.

And the future? Where the two towers once stood, the One World Trade Center is being built. Upon completion, the One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the United States, standing at a symbolic height of 1,776 feet It will be completed in September 11 is also a National Day of Service, a day to help others without reward. What can we do to serve others today?
