2 What do you know about your emotions? How long do you think an emotion lasts? An emotion last from 60 to 90 seconds. It might feel longer because we revisit the triggering event in our minds and “re-experience” the emotion. What are some basic emotions that everyone feels? Anger, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, Guilt & Shame Why do we have emotions? What are they used for? - To express to yourself - To express to others

3 What do we do when we feel an emotion? What do you do when you feel anger? -Attack -Yell -Hurt Yourself or Someone Else What do you do when you feel sad? -Cry -Isolate What do you do when you feel afraid? - Run away - Shut down

4 Feelings can serve us When is it functional or helpful to be angry? When you are in danger or being threatened, anger helps protect you. When is it functional or helpful to be sad? When you are feeling loss or disappointment, expressing sadness helps release sad energy. When is it functional or helpful to be afraid? When you are in danger and need to get away. When is it functional or helpful to be loving? When someone is available to receive your love and to return it.

5 When emotions don’t fit a situation, they can interfere with our success What happens when you’re afraid to ask a question in class? You don’t understand and may not pass the class. What happens when you’re angry because your friend didn’t talk to you today? You might stop talking to your friend and lose the friendship. What happens when you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend but you keep checking on them on social media hoping your love will return You keep putting energy into a relationship that is no longer available and you don’t allow space for a new relationship.

6 When emotions don’t fit: Take opposite action - FEAR: Ask your friend a question in class if you are afraid of asking the teacher. - LOVE: Stop checking on your ex and move onto new relationships. - ANGER: Leave the scene if you feel you will do something harmful to someone else or yourself. Return when you are calm enough to talk about what happened. - SADNESS: Share your sadness and your tears with a trusted friend or family member. Don’t isolate and pretend everything is okay.
