Welcome to AT Math! Colleen Stefani

Weekly- “Keeping In Touch”-should come home on Mondays Daily- Assignment Notebooks and Take Home Folders Ms. McTighe and I sign the students out each day. Homework only should be listed. Wednesdays- Dr. Kotalik’s newsletter, LEHSO information, etc. SOCS- online website

University of Chicago Everyday Mathematics will be used for most concepts Accelerated Curriculum-5 th grade series Games played to help practice skills and concepts Some units will be taught out of order to better coordinate with projects Alternate resources will be used to teach some computational skills (long division and double digit multiplication)

School Store Unit 1- Number Theory Unit 6 Using Data Multiplication- ( in Everyday Math and supplemented with Silver Burdett and Ginn) Unit 4 Division (long division supplemented with Silver Burdett and Ginn) Hands-On Equations Unit 10- Algebra Unit 7-Exponents and Negative Numbers Geometry Unit 3-Geometry Explorations Unit 5- Fractions, Decimals and Percents Unit 8-Fractions and Ratios Unit 9-Coordinates, Area, Volume and Capacity Unit 11- Volume Unit 12- Probability (2.6 Chance Events)

Consists of 5 competitions 1st one in November 6 questions in 30 minutes Focus on problem solving strategies 5 days a week start with a sample problem to discuss Students share strategies they used to solve problems (not only one way to solve a problem!)

Problem Solving Simulation Teams work cooperatively to solve problems Variety of strategies covered Most Fridays

Encourage mastery Practice packets will come home 30 problems in 1½ minutes (2 seconds to retrieve the fact and 1 second to record it) Students move through tests at their own pace Mastery will help with longer computations!

Mrs. Hurt will push in to team teach every Tuesday to: Help with ongoing projects Team Teach She will also pull out qualifying students each Wednesday from 9:00-9:45

Push for standardized tests (in math too) Students will score points for the correct answer as well as for their ability to explain how they came to the answer. This is something that is sometimes difficult for AT students- they simply know they are correct. POW-Problem of the Week Modeled on Monday-due on Friday

Next, I decided to use the Guess and Check Strategy Then I guessed that Tanner spent 10 cents and Tyler spent 25 cents. Next, I added the numbers and found the sum of 35 cents was too low Next, I tried 11 cents for Tanner and 26 cents for Tyler Finally, after I looked back at the question and checked my addition, I concluded that Tanner had spent 11 cents and Tyler spent 26 cents for the 37 cent Popsicle. because I needed to try different number combinations to see if they worked to solve the problem. I picked 25 cents for Tyler because I knew he spent 15 cents more than Tanner. because the Popsicle cost 37 cents. because I knew the answer needed to be 2 cents higher. First I read the problem. Then I planned how to solve it.

4 th graders survey all students at Schiesher in grades 4-5 Graphs are created from data Small groups determine what inventory they feel should be ordered based on the survey results PowerPoint presentations will be made to apply for loan Order will be placed Grand Opening in October or November Store open on designated Fridays Cross curricular- advertising, announcements, phone messages, etc. Students are consulted and make real-life decisions through every step of the process

Homework every night except Friday 50 % of grade comes from homework assignments 50 % of grade comes from tests Mad Minutes and POW/Continental Math results are considered for report card but not averaged into grade

Math Websites for Students Here are some math websites for students that you may want to use when reviewing different concepts throughout the year: this site could help prepare for timed tests -where you can find sample Continental Math problems -home page for Everyday Math If you find other good sites, let me know and I will add them to the list!

I appreciate the opportunity to share information about the 4 th grade AT math program, and I’m looking forward to a wonderful year with your children!
