2 Welcome Parents! Welcome to our classroom. Goals for tonight: To help you understand the work your child will be doing throughout the school year. To explain my expectations of each student. To share information about how you can support your child’s learning.

3 Curriculum Goals September 2010 thru May 2011 Review 5 th Gr: May-June 2010 Number Sense (order of operations) Patterns and Sequences (predicting the next term) Fractions, Decimals, Percents Geometry and measurement (m-cm/gal-oz, area, perimeter, volume)

4 Curriculum Goals September 2010 thru May 2011 Probability (chance, games, matches) Analyzing data (reading graphs) NYS 6 th Grade Math Exam

5 NYS 6 th Math Exam Scheduled for May 2011 Students can score a 1 thru 4 on the exam (1 is low, 4 is high) Breakdown of exam: ~35 % Number sense and operations ~20 % Algebra ~20% Geometry ~15% Probability and Statistics ~10% Measurement

6 Curriculum Goals May 2011 thru June 2011 Exploring graphs (relationships) Variables and rules (algebra) Solving equations (different strategies)

7 Class Information Rules - Discipline Plan Grading Policy 25% Quizzes (lowest dropped, signed) 25% Tests (signed) 10% Homework (2 pts per HW) 10% Projects, Reports and Portfolio 10% Class work (on task, on-time) 10% Classroom participation 10% Notebook/Binder

8 Class Information Progress reports will be sent home in the middle of each quarter. Report Cards will be sent home every quarter: November, February, April and June Students should expect to have about 15-20 minutes of homework a night. I expect homework to be completed each day, if it is not done I will contact you to see how we can help your child complete it.

9 Class Information Students should have the following: Binder with 5 tab divider for class - class work - homework - quizzes tests - early finishers/journal - Test Prep/Coach book Constant supply of pencils!

10 Class Information Student textbooks Impact textbook (green) Math handbook (small red) NYS review (large red) Reflective journal (grey)

11 Class Information Students will have work from the internet assigned: www.glencoe.com (personal tutor, self check quizzes) http://mcgraw.nycenet.edu (quizzes or break packets assigned)

12 Get Involved! Please check your child’s agenda book for assigned homework. Check that they are doing their homework and understanding it! I will require students to sign ALL quizzes and tests. Please check out how your child is doing on them. Urge students to take NEAT notes and to keep an organized binder. We have spent some time on this in class, but please also look through their notebook to check for neatness.
