Bell Ringer #18 – 5/19/10 Explain what you observed in the movie Secret Life of Bees about life for women in South Carolina during the 1960s.

Afrocentricity The philosophy of Afrocentricity captured media attention in the 80s and 90s. Philosophers argued that Af- Ams needed to re-orient from “Eurocentric” views of history. Afrocentrists argued that European history arose from African origins, particularly the culture of ancient Egypt.

Afrocentricity as a Celebration Recognition of African culture. Africa and its descendants should be at the center of historical studies to appreciate black people in World History.

Afrocentric Culture

Black Muslims There are 1.5 million black American Muslims. Many of these individuals rejected Christianity for what they saw as a “Eurocentric” bias.

Black Muslim Organizations The Nation of Islam is the best known group with about 30,000 members. The largest is the Muslim American Society, with 500,000 members. It was founded by Wraith Muhammad, son of Elijah Muhammad, who rejected racial aspects and left the Nation.

Louis Farrakhan Born in the West Indies, he became a minister of the Nation of Islam. Took leadership in 1978 and developed many economic enterprises (restaurants, newspaper, cosmetics) and expanded recruitment.
