Tip one: it’s about people What do you think young people need to know about refugees and asylum seekers? Discuss your ideas and note them down in your books.

Tip two: have an angle What do you remember about the ways writers use language in headlines to communicate their point of view? For each of the following images, write a headline that shows a point of view about asylum seekers: make sure you use at least one persuasive device!

Tip three: keep it objective What does it mean to be ‘objective’? Why is it important that newspaper articles are objective? How can you make sure that your article is objective?

Tip four: quote people Who could you quote in an article about refugees and asylum seekers? Discuss your ideas and note them down in your books.

Tip five: don’t get too descriptive (keep sentences and paragraphs short) Choose one of the headlines you wrote earlier and write the opening paragraph for an article that could follow: you might have to make up some of the details, but focus on making your writing clear, concise and to the point.
