2 Media and Non-fiction texts (Paper 1) When reading a non-fiction text you need to think about the language and the presentation. Language = What words have been used and why Presentation = What the text looks like

3 Presentational devices These are features like; a headline, sub-heading, image, logo, different fonts and texts. Look at the ‘This is Billy’ leaflet and annotate (make notes/label) the presentational devices used in the leaflet. Also, try to comment on the effect that the device is supposed to have (why it has been used). Language devices These are features like; emotive language, repetition, use of facts and opinions, direct address. 4 Try to answer the following questions (aim to write approximately half a side for each one) 1.Explain how presentational devices are used in the leaflet. 7 Exam Techniques for Paper 1 Section A Restate the question – If the question says “Explain how the language devices are persuasive…” then you could start the answer “The language devices are persuasive in a number of ways.” Use quotations from the text to support your answer – these must be short and use quotation marks Make sure you answer the question – look for a key word or phrase in the question and repeat this in your answer Use connectives (Also, Furthermore, Moreover, In addition to, Secondly) to link your writing when making several points – this shows the examiner that you are making different points Make sure your writing is clear and makes sense – check it carefully by proofreading Write in a detail – the more points you make the more chance you’ve got of getting the available marks

8 TASK: Write the title ‘Top Tips for Paper 1 Section A’ and write down in your own words the six tips discussed on the previous slide Try to answer the following questions (aim to write approximately half a side for each one) as if they are exam questions.
