“When we paint- whether it is on our bodies for ceremony, or on bark, or on canvas for the market- we are not just painting for fun or profit…we paint to show the rest of the world that we own this country- and that the land owns us “ (Yunupingu 14).

Aboriginal X-Ray Art Global Connections

History X-Ray Art was developed around 2000BC Practiced by the people of the Northern Region of Australia in the Arnhem Land. Depicts animals or human structures in which the internal organs and bone structure is visible. Sometimes relates to stories and sacred mythology but also for education and to depict the animals in the region.

X-Ray Style “The style can be seen in the Mesolithic art of northern Europe (c. 8000–2700 bc), where early examples have been found, but animals with internal motifs have also been discovered in the art of hunting cultures in Siberia, the Arctic Circle, North America, western New Guinea, New Ireland, India, and Malaysia. It is found today primarily in the Aboriginal rock art and bark paintings of eastern Arnhem Land, in northern Australia” (Britannica.com).MesolithicAboriginal

History continued… Art was painted in caves and on rocks (think about the medium of painting on rock) QUESTIONS… -What colors, techniques make most sense? - What do you think the purpose would be for certain Aboriginal people to depict animals and their insides?

Red (Ochre), Yellow, Brown, Black, and White

Cross Hatching -lines and criss-cross pattern-

Technique With X-Ray Style Art, there is no empty or negative space within the figure/animal/shape The entire internal portion is covered with cross hatching, stippling (think back to the examples of dot painting) and design
