Introduction to Symbolism

Symbolism Derived from Greek word meaning “to throw together.” Creates direct meaningful equation between (1) a specific object, setting, scene, character, or action and (2) ideas, values, persons, or ways of life. A substitute for the element being signified, much as the flag stands for the ideals of the nation.

Kinds of Symbols Cultural: widely recognized within a given culture. Contextual: having specific symbolic value and meaning only in individual works.
