Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  The Galatians needed a reminder of a solid Biblical principle v. 9  To accept the Judaizers’ “leaven” (circumcision) implied Christ was not enough…it only ruined the “lump” (all of N.T. Christianity)

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Even though the Galatians had greatly disappointed Paul, he had not yet totally given up on them v. 10a  Yes…he had spoken sternly at times in the letter 1:6 3:1, 3 4:16

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Paul was still confident in these brethren  He hoped they “…would adopt no other view” (remain faithful to the truth)  The Judaizers would answer to God for the damage they had caused v. 10b

10b An Important Principle… Preachers/Teachers/Parents should always show confidence & support after giving a stern rebuke Heb 6:9-11

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  One more point Paul wanted to address…  Apparently, he was being slandered at also teaching (advocating) circumcision  Paul’s question…if he taught such, why was he being persecuted? v. 11a

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Why would such a charge be made?  The best guess to be made is found in Acts 16:1-3…Paul’s efforts in having Timothy circumcised  Where was he?In Galatia!

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Paul’s true position re: circumcision was shown re: Titus and the Jerusalem Conference 2:3-5 Acts 15  The Judaizers stumbled at the cross and the message Paul preached v. 11b

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Why the Judaizers stumbled…  They objected to a crucified Lord releasing all men from the bondage to the Law  Had Paul preached what they did, they would not have stumbled…the “offense” would be “abolished” (ceased to exist)

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  Why the Judaizers stumbled  The simple gospel message continues to be a stumbling block to many 1 Cor 1:18-25

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  The last statement in this “pause” is Paul’s harshest one…it is reserved for the Judaizers v. 12  Because they were causing so much trouble among the Galatians, Paul wished they would “cut themselves off”

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  3rd & final pause 5:2-12  “Cut off” or “mutilate” = sever or remove something totally Mk 9:43, 45 Jn 18:10  Re: the context of circumcision, it is not hard to see Paul’s harsh meaning  Not just remove the foreskin…he desired castration for them (making a eunuch)

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10  These concern varying situations they would find themselves in everyday living, interacting with others (saints & sinners)  Opportunities to demonstrate they were justified, “Spirit-led” children of promise

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ê Re: how they treat others 5:13-15  They were “called to freedom” [THEME]  Free from sin...free from law’s curse  Such “liberty” is not to be used on their own fleshly desires

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ê Re: how they treat others 5:13-15  Instead, Christians are to “…serve one another through love”  Such love actually fulfills the law v. 14 Lev 19:18 Mt 22:36-40 Rom 13:8-10 Agape

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ê Re: how they treat others 5:13-15  The very opposite of the love expected of justified saints is destructive v. 15  Biting & devouring each other…leads to consuming each other

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ê Re: how they treat others 5:13-15  Biting is closely akin to backbiting  “Bite with the teeth; to cut, lacerate, and rend with reproaches” (slander, gossip, defamation, evil speaking) Rom 1:30

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ê Re: how they treat others 5:13-15  Sometimes saints act no better than wild animals who tear each other to pieces  Hurtful words do not serve others…they only lead to consuming others

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ë Re: remaining faithful 5:16-18  Saints will walk by the Spirit  Proves they are “Spirit-led”  Living in harmony with the teachings revealed, approved by the Spirit

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ë Re: remaining faithful 5:16-18  Fleshly desires constantly battle against Spirit-led conduct  A “Spirit-led” saint does not seek to be placed under a law-based system v. 18

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ë Re: remaining faithful 5:16-18  Not arguing the absence of Divine law  Point Ù one doesn’t need a law-based system to be morally restrained…walking by the Spirit restrains fleshly desires

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10 Ë Re: remaining faithful 5:16-18  This point begins the very familiar discussion to follow Works Of The Flesh Fruit Of The Spirit vs.

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia The Works Of The Flesh (Gal. 5:19-21) How To Have More Fighting, Anger, Unrest, Stress, & Unhappiness (Emptiness) In Your Life

Studies From Paul’s Letter To The Churches In Galatia 3rd Proposition & Proof 5:1 – 6:10  Paul’s “proof” is the exhortations he gives the Galatian saints 5:13 – 6:10  The Works Of The Flesh 5:19-21  Perhaps the best way to examine them is to view them by “categories”  Attributes demonstrating sinful attitudes or actions (absence of a Spirit-led life)
