Galatians: The book of freedom (Review)

Gal 1 1) PAUL, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead), 2) and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3) Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

4) who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5) to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. 6) I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,

7) which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8) But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9) As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

10) For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. 11) But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12) For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

According to Galatians what is This different gospel? Vs 6 This perverted gospel? Vs 7 This accursed gospel? Vs 8 This man-pleasing gospel? Vs 10

Gal 2:3) Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. 4) And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), 5) to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

12) for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13) And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.

Gal 2:16) “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

What do we know so far about this false gospel? 1. It holds again to the separation of Jews and Gentiles 2:12 2. It is about circumcision 2:3 3. It is about bondage 2:4 4. It is about hypocrisy 2:13 5. It is about works 2:16 6. It can fool Peter 2:12 7. It can fool Barnabus 2:13 8. It can fool Jewish believers 2:13

Let’s continue: Gal 2:20) “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21) “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”

Gal 3 1) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2) This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3) Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

10) For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” 12) Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.”

16) Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. 18) For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Gal 4:3) Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. 7) Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. 9) But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10) You observe days and months and seasons and years.

What else do we know about this false gospel? 1. It is about setting aside the grace of God 2:21 2. It is about righteousness through the law, both justification and sanctification 2:20. 3. It’s about not obeying the truth 3:1 4. It’s about receiving the Spirit by the works of the law. 3:2

5. It’s about being sanctified by the law 3:3 6. It is about being under the curse 3:10 7. It’s about doing all the law 3:10,12 8. It’s about being Jewish 3:16 9. It’s about inheriting the promise by what you do and not by faith. 3:18 10. It is about being a child/slave in position. 4:1

11. It’s about being in bondage 4:3 12. It’s about turning to something weaker: Days, years, Sabbaths, circumcision. 13. It’s about separation between Jews and Gentiles, the tabernacle, the levitical priesthood, the whole law! 4:10; Heb 7.

Gal 4:21) Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22) For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23) But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

24) which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar– 26) but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. 28) Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

29) But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. 30) Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” 31) So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

Lastly for today, what else do we know about this false gospel? 1. It’s about being under the flesh or being under a covenant where you try to do what only God can do! 4:23 2. It’s about persecuting those who say, “where sin abounds grace super abounds”. 4:29 3. It’s about your system being cast out. 4:30

It’s about not being an heir 4:31 Questions/comments
