5 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Before proving his 2nd Proposition, Paul seems to chastise the Galatian saints (similar to 1:6) He asks 5 rhetorical questions vv. 1-5 “O Galatians, who has bewitched you?” v. 1 “Did the Spirit come via law or faith?” v. 2 “A Spirit beginning…a fleshly finish?” v. 3 “Were your hardships in vain?” v. 4 “Does God work among you via works of the Law, or by hearing of faith?” v. 5

6 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Spiritual Blessings: Law or Faith? 3:1 – 4:31 2nd Proposition 2:16 “Justification not through law, but through faith.” Proof Statements Abraham offered as a “case study” vv. 6-9 Law only justifies the perfect do-er vv A covenant was already in force vv

7 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Spiritual Blessings: Law or Faith? 3:1 – 4:31 2nd Proposition 2:16 “Justification not through law, but through faith.” Proof Statements Abraham offered as a “case study” vv. 6-9 Faith “reckoned” (counted) as righteousness Saints are his children if we share his faith Not a “1-time experience of faith” Why important to use him? Mt 3:7-9 Gen 15:6 Gen 17:1-27 Rom 4:1-22 Gen 22:1-14 Jas 2:21-23

8 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Spiritual Blessings: Law or Faith? 3:1 – 4:31 2nd Proposition 2:16 “Justification not through law, but through faith.” Proof Statements Law only justifies the perfect do-er vv Seeking justification on this basis actually brings a curse, not a blessing v. 10b Also foretold by prophecy Hab 2:4 Law & Faith are opposite “systems” Christ redeemed us from this “curse”

9 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Spiritual Blessings: Law or Faith? 3:1 – 4:31 2nd Proposition 2:16 “Justification not through law, but through faith.” Proof Statements A covenant was already in force vv Mosaic Law came after God’s promises re: salvation to all mankind God’s words to Abraham were already a “ratified covenant”…the Law didn’t set it aside Heb 6:13-20

10 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 After proving the 2nd Proposition, Paul asks and answers an anticipated Jewish objection “Why the Law then?” v. 19a The Law’s 2 main purposes vv. 19b-25 It was added because of sin vv. 19b-22 It was to make sin obvious, exceedingly sinful Rom 7:7-13 Duration “…until the Seed should come” Yet, it did not prove contrary to God’s original promises to Abraham

11 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 After proving the 2nd Proposition, Paul asks and answers an anticipated Jewish objection “Why the Law then?” v. 19a The Law’s 2 main purposes vv. 19b-25 It was our schoolmaster (tutor) vv It was to lead us to Christ Greek word for “tutor” = Paidagōgos

12 Paidagōgos Among the Greeks & Romans, he was a trustworthy slave who was charged with the duty of supervising the lives & morals of boys belonging to upper class families. He was a strict enforcer of the rules re: morality & conduct. The boys weren’t allowed so much as to step outside the home without him before the age of manhood. He would also accompany them to & from school to be taught by the teacher. He would be such a “guide” until the boys obtained their freedom (legal age manhood). – Thayer, p. 472

13 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 After proving the 2nd Proposition, Paul asks and answers an anticipated Jewish objection “Why the Law then?” v. 19a The Law’s 2 main purposes vv. 19b-25 It was our schoolmaster (tutor) vv It was to lead us to Christ Greek word for “tutor” = Paidagōgos Once faith came (i.e. we became free), there was no longer a need for the tutor

14 Paul’s Epistle To The Galatians
Lesson 4 – Galatians 3 Paul makes final observations re: Abraham’s children vv *** NOTE: connection back to v. 7 *** We are such “by faith in Christ Jesus” v. 26 Accomplished at N.T. water baptism v. 27 Personal particulars no longer matter v (blow to Judaizing argument) If we belong to Christ, then are we Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise v Gen 12:3
