12. Paidagōgos
Among the Greeks & Romans, he was a trustworthy slave who was charged with the duty of supervising the lives & morals of boys belonging to upper class families. He was a strict enforcer of the rules re: morality & conduct.
The boys weren’t allowed so much as to step outside the home without him before the age of manhood. He would also accompany them to & from school to be taught by the teacher.
He would be such a “guide” until the boys obtained their freedom (legal age manhood).
