Primary Technical Excellence Awards AIAA-ASC James H. Starnes Jr. Award In honor of James Starnes, a leader in fields of structures and materials, the James H. Starnes Award is presented to recognize continued significant contribution to and demonstrated promotion of the field of structural mechanics over an extended period of time emphasizing practical solutions, to acknowledge high professionalism, and to acknowledge the strong mentoring of and influence on colleagues. The award is sponsored by the American Society of Composites (ASC) and AIAA and presented every four years generally at the Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference. Administration of the award resides with AIAA. The next presentation will be in Nomination Deadline: 1 June of the year preceding presentation. Structures, Structural Dynamics, & Materials Award Established in 1967, the Structures, Structural Dynamics, & Materials Award is presented to an individual who has been responsible for an outstanding sustained technical or scientific contribution in aerospace structures, structural dynamics, or materials. It is not presented in the years that the Walter J. and Angeline H. Crichlow Trust Prize, AIAA-ASC James H. Starnes Award or Ashley Award for Aeroelasticity are presented. This biennial award (even numbered years) is generally presented at the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference. Nomination Deadline: 1 October Walter J. and Angeline H. Crichlow Trust Prize The Walter J. and Angeline H. Crichlow Trust Prize was established in 1994 and is presented to a single nominee (which can be an individual or small team of up to 4 contributing individuals) for a specific achievement or body of work (perhaps extending over a period of years) that became significant during the immediate past 15 years. The Prize is presented every four years generally at the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference. The next award will be presented in Nomination Deadline: 15 June of the year prior to presentation. Aerospace Design Engineering Award Approved by the Board of Directors in 1992, the Aerospace Design Engineering Award was established to recognize design engineers who have made outstanding technical, educational or creative achievements that exemplifies the quality and elements of design engineering. This award is presented biennially (in even-numbered years) at the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference. Nomination Deadline: 1 October Sustained Service Award The Sustained Service Award is presented to recognize sustained, significant service and contributions to AIAA by members of the Institute. The nominee/recipient must be a member in good standing who has shown continuing dedication to the interests of the Institute by making significant and sustained contributions over a period of years. Past and present national officers are eligible. Up to 20 awards are presented each year. A nomination form and scoresheet documenting AIAA participation and contributions are required. Nominees for the award must score a minimum of 100 points on the Score Sheet. Distinguished Service Award The Distinguished Service Award was established by the Board of Directors in 1968 to give unique recognition to an individual member of AIAA who has distinguished himself or herself over a period of years. "Period of years" is interpreted as a minimum of five years of identifiable participation, not necessarily consecutive. The recipient must be a member in good standing who has shown particular dedication to the interests of the Institute by making significant and continuing contributions. Technical contributions or contributions to the profession as a whole or to the aeronautical/astronautical/hydronautical disciplines are not a consideration for this award. This annual award is generally presented at the Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala. Nomination Deadline: 1 October Nominee Eligibility: Current national officers or directors are not eligible for this award. 5

Other Awards Aerospace Software Engineering Award The Aerospace Software Engineering Award is presented for outstanding technical and/or management contributions to aeronautical or astronautical software engineering. A successful candidate for this award must have demonstrated a personal and long-term commitment to the encouragement of international cooperation among individuals and/or organizations within the world-wide aerospace community. This commitment to cooperation should be demonstrated by more than a professional assignment. It should involve unique and innovative leadership of such cooperation, and/or voluntary contributions to internally cooperative effects or even personal writings or speeches advocating this cause.
