Ch 14 The Reproductive System

Female Terms  Ovaries- oophor/o, ovari/o- Produce ova (eggs) and female hormones.  Fallopian tubes- salping/o- Catch mature ova, provide the site for fertilization, transport ova to uterus.  Uterus- hyster/o, metr/o, metri/o, uter/o- Protects and supports the developing child.  Placenta- placent/o- Exchanges nutrients and waste between the mother and fetus during pregnancy.  Hysterectomy- The surgical removal of the uterus that may or may not include the cervix.  Fibroid tumor- A benign tumor composed of muscle and fibrous tissue that occurs in the wall of the uterus.

Male Terms  Testicles, testes- orch/o, orchid/o, test/I, test/o, testicul/o- Produce sperm and the male hormone testosterone.  Prostate gland- The prostate secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm.  Seminal vesicle- secrete a significant proportion of the fluid that ultimately becomes semen.  Vas deferens- transport sperm from the epididymis.  Epididymis- Holds the sperm  Vasectomy- The vas deferens is severed so sperm cannot enter the seminal stream.

results from the placenta implanting either near to, or overlying, the outlet of the uterus (womb).

Ch 14 Terms  -pause stopping  pre- before, in front of  post- after, behind  cervic/o neck, cervix  colp/o vagina  gynec/o women, female  mamm/o breast  oo/o, ov/I, ov/o egg  orch/o, orchi/o, orchid/o testicles, testis, testes  oophor/o, ovary/o ovary

Words  Menopause> the normal stopping of the monthly menstrual periods  Premenstrual Syndrome> symptoms occurring within the two-week period before menstruation: AKA PMS  Postpartum> is the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks where hormones and uterus are returning to normal.  Cervicitis> inflammation of the cervix  Colposcopy> the direct visual examination of the tissues of the cervix and vagina using a colposcope  Gynecologist> a specialist in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system  Mammogram> an X-ray image of your breast used to screen for breast cancer  Ovariectomy> surgical removal of one or both ovaries  Orchitis> inflammation of one or both testicles  Oophoritis> inflammation of an ovary
