1 KEY CONCEPT Female and male reproductive organs fully develop during puberty.
Reproductive system – composed of specialized organs, glands, and hormones

2 Puberty – (sexual maturity) Hypothalamus and pituitary gland secrete hormones – follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to begin the development of sexual characteristics. Girls = yrs. old Boys = yrs. old

3 The female reproductive system produces ova.
There are two main functions of the female reproductive system. produce ova (ovum), or egg cells in the ovaries (2) until menopause ( yrs.) have 2 million potential eggs when born (start in womb) provide a place where a zygote develops (womb or uterus) uterus cervix rectum vagina urethra urinary bladder pubic bone ovary fallopian tube

4 Estrogen has three main functions. (steroid hormone)
develop female sexual characteristics such as widened pelvis, increased fat/bone mass, enlarged breast size 2. develop eggs (meiosis- 1 egg/3 polar bodies) 3. prepare uterus for pregnancy every month

5 An Egg cell matures each month and is released from one ovary. (R or L). Egg travels down the fallopian tube (4 in.) over several days to the uterus. Eggs are fertilized in the fallopian tubes. The uterus is the size of a pear. The cervix is the opening of the uterus. The cervix must dilate and efface for childbirth to begin. (4 in.)

6 The male reproductive system produces sperm.
There are two main functions of the male reproductive system. produce sperm cells (entire lives) in testes (testicles) deliver sperm to the female reproductive system urinary bladder vas deferens pubic bone prostate gland penis urethra testis scrotum epididymis bulbourethral gland rectum seminal vesicle

7 Testosterone has two main functions. (steroid hormone)
developing male sexual characteristics- deeper voice, increased muscle mass, body hair, increased bone density producing sperm

8 Male Reproductive System
Testes are contained within the scrotum. Keeps temperature 2-3 degrees lower. Epididymus – tube where sperm mature Vas deferens – duct sperm travels to leave the body through the urethra (Vasectomy) Prostate gland, bulbourethral gland, seminal vesicle add fluids to create semen. Fluids nourish, protect against acidity.
