TEETH NUMBERING SYSTEMS UNCLASSIFIED//REL TO NATO/ISAF

OBJECTIVES Understand the FDI (federation dentaire international) tooth numbering system Describe how numbering systems designate arch quadrant, and tooth

FEDERATION DENTAIRE INTERNATIONALE (FDI) The FDI numbering system was introduced to provide a standard international system of coding teeth.

FDI numbering Permanent Teeth Primary Teeth Maxillary right 1 5 Maxillary left 2 6 Mandibular left 3 7 Mandibular right 4 8 The teeth within each quadrant are then numbered 1 to 8, from the midline. The primary teeth are numbered 1 to 5.

FDI numbering Each tooth is identified with a two-digit figure: the first digit designates the quadrant the second digit codes the individual tooth. Permanent teeth Primary teeth

FDI numbering By example: 63 Primary teeth Permanent teeth 46 the right permanent first mandibular molar is the tooth #46. The left upper primary canine is the tooth # 63. 63 Primary teeth Permanent teeth 46

The American numbering system Be aware there are other systems Most of the world uses the FDI however the United States uses the “Universal” system. You are not required to know this system, however the following slide shows the numbering for your information only.
