Overall Classification: UNCLASSIFIED//REL TO NATO/ISAF

 The nervous system communicates information from the outside world, interpreting it and then gives the body functions essential for the general well being of the body. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

The nervous system is classified as follows:  The Central Nervous System  The Peripheral Nervous System AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The CNS is made up of the:  a)brain  b)spinal cord AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 All nerves that branch out from the central nervous system penetrate every part of the body, thus making up the peripheral nervous system. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The cranial nerves number twelve pairs and are named as number I through XII following the order in which they leave the cranial fossa AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 They are also named according to their function or distribution.  Each cranial nerve is paired; that is, one exits from each side of the skull AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The following is a list of the cranial nerves: ◦ Cranial Nerve IOlfactory nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve IIOptic nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve IIIOculomotor nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve IVTrochlear nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve V Trigeminal nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve VIAbducent nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve VII Facial nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve VIII Auditory (stato-acoustic) nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve IX Glossopharyngeal nerve Cranial Nerve X Vagus nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve XI Accessory spinal nerve ◦ Cranial Nerve XII Hypoglossal nerve AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The trigeminal nerve is the most extensive and important nerve of the facial region and oral cavity providing sensory fibers for the face, oral cavity and the teeth, and motor fibers to the muscles of mastication and some other muscles. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 As its name suggests, the trigeminal nerve consists of three parts:  The Ophthalmic Nerve (V1)  The Maxillary Nerve (V2)  The Mandibular Nerve (V3) AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The ophthalmic will not be covered in this course :  The Maxillary Nerve (V2)  Important branches of V2 ◦ Anterior superior alveolar ◦ Middle superior alveolar ◦ Posterior superior alveolar ◦ Nasal ◦ Palatine AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 As its name suggests, the trigeminal nerve consists of three parts:  The Mandibular Nerve (V3) - important branches: ◦ Inferior alveolar ◦ Lingual ◦ Buccal ◦ Mental ◦ Incisive AFAMS Dental Advisor Team
