Technological Revolution Investigation Hessa Al Kubaisi 8D

Japan before World War II Japan was isolated. They never had any contact with the ‘outside’ world. They had boundaries. Japan had four eras: : Edo Japan : Meiji Restoration : Imperial Japan

: Edo Japan In this era, Tokugawa shoguns ruled Japan which was seeing an economical and social change in an outdated society. People were moving to towns and cities more and education began to spread as well as an increase in traders. The Edo era has a romantic image to the Japanese.

: Meiji Restoration The Meiji period experienced a fast change in political, social, and economical institutions. The Meiji restoration is an event in 1868 where Shoguns lost their power and the emperor regained it. Japanese ports were closed and denied access to all but Chinese and Dutch traders. The United States of America wanted to trade with Japan as well as needing the Japanese ports to find resources for their whaling fleet.

: Meiji Restoration (continued) In July 8 th 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry arrived at Edo bay which scared the Japanese and made them realize that it could no longer be isolated without going to war. In March 31 st 1854 Japan signed a treaty with Perry which called for: 1.Peace between both countries 2.Opening two ports to American ships 3.If any American ship wrecked on the Japanese coast the Japanese would provide help 4.Permission for American ships to trade in Japanese ports

: Meiji Restoration (continued) During the Meiji era, Japan changed from a primarily agricultural nation that didn’t focus on technology. But when the era ended in 1912 Japan had developed a transport and communication system, concentrated on educating its people, created an industrial sector based on latest technology.

: Imperial Japan The Japanese industry expanded both in light industries e.g textiles and heavy industries e.g steel and shipbuilding. The cities in Japan grew and in the countryside the rich landlords owned more land and the poor became poorer. In 1922 the economic world depression hit Japan hard which meant that the farmers found no market and economic growth slowed down, and this increased social problems.

: Imperial Japan (continued) In WWI Japan was allies with the U.S and U.K which meant that they were should have gained land in the Versailles peace conference in The U.S opposed this greatly, which meant that no land was gained. This combined with economic depression created more disappointment in the Japanese government.

: Imperial Japan (Pearl Harbor) In August 1941, Japan made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, where 90% of the U.S Navy was. This meant that it took the U.S a full year to recover and when they did, the U.S Navy and Army, cut off the Japan commands one by one. In 1945 the Japanese government still held hope that they could negotiate an end to the war. The U.S dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, one day later Russia declared war on Japan, a day after that a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and the emperor agreed to surrender.

Technology before WWII Before the Meijii restoration, Japan was a primarily agricultural nation that didn’t focus on technology. After the era ended in 1912 Japan developed a transport and communication system and created an industrial sector based on latest technology.

Japan after World War II With America’s help, Japan rose to built their economy again. With the help of basic industries, they succeeded, but soon set out to advanced industries. The Japanese then shifted to high-tech industries using high specialized technologies. Since the 1970’s Japan has become the leader in making DVD/CD, televisions stereo equipment.

Japan after World War II Allied powers occupied Japan until 1952 when the U.S occupation of Japan ended. In 1955 the Japanese economy restored itself as well as it’s political system. In the sixties Japan grew to be the third largest economy in the world and especially in heavy industries such as steel, chemicals, and advanced technology.

Survey Question 1 How often do you use electronic devices in your daily lives? This data shows that people have started using more technology in their daily lives then they used to in the past. Whether they’re reading the news, contacting their families, or even just writing stuff down, they keep using technology for their needs.

Survey Question 2 How has the use of technology affected your educational life? Today, technology has become more evolved. It has affected our educational lives both in positive and negative ways. Either helping us in our studies, or distracting us completely.

Survey Question 3 Which is the most prevalent (common) type of bullying? This information shows that even though technology has its positives, it has the negatives too. In the past when people would be bullied, they would be confronted in person. But as technology evolved, bullies have found another way of bullying people ‘anonymously’ and without getting in trouble for it.

Survey Question 4 How often do you use the electronic devices for school? This shows me that the schools are involving more technology than they used to in the past, and that the school administration believe that technology will be more useful and helpful towards the student’s education.

Survey Question 5 Would you rather use your laptop for the rest of your life or your phone? This shows that the majority of people rather use their phones than their laptops. Although, it was a close call.

Change in technology It told me that the more we use technology in our daily lives and the more evolved, the more we depend on using it and need it for every day things. Such as, education and entertainment. The data also told me that technology changes the way people interact with each other in both positive and negative ways. What did the data tell you about the change in technology?

Technology: Past and Present What conclusions can you draw about technology in our society today compared to technology in the past? In the past and in the present, people were dependent on technology for daily use. Except that in the present, the technology is more advanced and more depended on.
