developing people, improving young lives The QTS* Standards Bath Spa University 8 September 2009 Sheila Steer Training and Development Agency for Schools *Qualified Teacher Status

What makes a good teacher?

How do we know? How do you know?

Professional Standards for Teachers in England (September 2007) Bring coherence to the professional and occupational standards for the whole school workforce within a wider framework of standards – teachers – teaching assistants – higher level teaching assistants – leadership

Professional Standards for Teachers Define the characteristics of teachers at each career stage – award of QTS (qualified teacher status) – NQT (newly qualified teacher) induction year – progressive stages in your teaching career

Professional Standards for Teachers The standards are used to – provide a framework for a teacher’s career and show what progression looks like – clarify professional characteristics that a teacher should be expected to maintain and build on – indicate teachers’ professional responsibility to be engaged in professional development throughout their careers – provide a backdrop to performance management

Professional Standards for Teachers Some trends – personalising children’s learning and raising achievement – promoting diversity – Every Child Matters and safeguarding children – curriculum change and innovation – changing school workforce – changing context of 21 st century schools

Professional Standards for Teachers The standards are arranged in three inter-linked sections – professional attributes – professional knowledge and understanding – professional skills Each set of standards builds on the previous set QTS  Induction  later stages of your teaching career

Teaching and learning professional attribute / knowledge / skill? Q10: have a knowledge and understanding of a range of teaching, learning and behaviour management strategies and know how use and adapt them, including how to personalise learning and provide opportunities for all learners to achieve their potential QTS standards

Q7: (a) reflect on and improve their practice, and take responsibility for identifying and meeting their developing professional needs (b) Identify priorities for their early professional development in the context of induction Q9: Act upon advice and feedback and be open to coaching and mentoring QTS standards

Subjects and curriculum professional attribute / knowledge / skill? Q14: Have a secure knowledge and understanding of their subjects / curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained QTS standards

Team working and collaboration professional attribute / knowledge / skill?
