Do Now What comes to your mind when you think of witches? List all ideas and thoughts.

II. Salem Witch Trials - People were accused of being witches A. How it began  Religious beliefs are the key factor -Puritans believed there was a constant struggle between good and evil -The devil picked the weakest people (women, children, and the insane)

B. Winter of Was not a lot to do for children in the winter - Did not have time to use their imagination - 3 young girls spent their nights watching a slave do magic, fortune telling, and listening to her stories

2. January 1692 the girls begin to have odd behavior - In church they begin screaming, twitching, and rolling on the floor - People are scared and want to know who did this to them

3. Pressure - The girls accuse 3 women of casting spells - A slave (Tituba) - A homeless beggar (Sarah Good) - An old woman who married her servant (Sarah Osborne)

 All 3 were seen as social outcasts - As time goes on more and more people are accused - Over 150 people were thrown in jail

4. Results - Both women and men were put on trial for witchcraft - 19 will be found guilty and hung

-One man will be crushed to death by stones -4 others die in jail -All claim they are innocent -Later in life the 3 girls withdraw their accusations/claims
