Explain how temperature affects the mass of water Objective: Explain how temperature affects the mass of water Warm-Up Pd. 1, 2, 8: How does a hot air balloon work?? Pd. 3/5 Go to “Thermometer Exit Ticket” in Mrs. Kelly folder and answer questions on interactive powerpoint.

Write Your Prediction: KEY QUESTION Write Your Prediction: Does hot water have More? Less? Or the Same? mass as cold water?

Lab Procedures Measure and record the mass of the empty cup. Carefully measure 50mL of cold water in the graduated cylinder. Use an eyedropper & get down eye level to get the exact volume. Pour the water into the cup. Measure the mass of the cup with cold water & record the data. Return cold water & dry out the cup Repeat steps 2 - 5 with 50mL of hot water.

Results Mass of empty flask and cap ______ g Mass of 50mL of cold water, flask, and cap ______ g Mass of 50mL of hot water, flask, and cap ______g

C – A = the mass of just the hot water B – A = the mass of just the cold water ____ grams ___ grams ___ grams ____ grams Mass of hot water Mass of cold water ___ ___ grams grams

C – A = the mass of just the hot water B – A = the mass of just the cold water 88.9 grams 39.8 grams 88.2 grams 39.8 grams 49.1 grams 48.4 grams Mass of hot water Mass of cold water 48.4 49.1 grams grams

How much did the mass of 50 mL of water increase with a drop in temperature?

Mass of cold water grams 49.1 Mass of hot water grams 48.4 .7 grams

Mass of cold water grams 49.1 Mass of hot water grams 48.4 .7 grams

Why does cold water weigh more than an equal volume of hot water?

Vocabulary!! (Add to your vocab. Paper) Viscosity: a liquid’s resistance to flowing Add to sentence box: *high viscosity = flows slowly, low viscosity = flows quickly Click on the picture below. Test different liquids, using the same temperature for both liquids. (You can change the temp., just change both of them to the same thing. Note: There is a pre-made viscosity lab contained in the teacher folder.
