On the 1 st of January, all the shops and factories close for three or four days and they get to go home. Outside everyone’s house is a piece of bamboo, pine and plum branches and also a rope of twisted straw to keep evil spirits away. On New Years Eve, local Japanese people gather at the Shrine, where there is a huge bon fire which burns all night. On the 3 rd day of the 3 rd month, it’s Girls Festival. All the families with girls set up a display with dolls which are nicely dressed in ancient costumes On May the 5 th, families with boys celebrate this day by flying brightly colour paper fish which look like a kite. On 15 th of November the festival is celebrated by all children aged 7,5,3. They dress up in their best clothes and go to their local shrine and pray for good health and long lives. Everyone enjoys many annual events. Firework displays are very big and spectacular. They always happen over water.

Family structure *In a traditional Japanese home, the family sits on the floor and eats their evening meal on a low table. *Japanese is a very crowded country so many Japanese people live in small high rise apartments or in houses on very small blocks of land. *Their beds are matrasses that are on the floor. They are rolled up and stored during the day. *Most families consist of mum, dad, children, grandparents and sometimes their great grandparents. The father of the house is the one that works while the mother stays at home looking after the house & children. *People always take their shoes off before they enter the house and they wear slippers or socks inside.
