TYPES OF CHARACTERS Protagonist – The hero in the story, more than likely the main character of the story. Antagonist – The rival or opponent to the main character, usually referred to as the villain. NOT ALWAYS THE BAD GUY! Example:The Three Little Pigs Protagonist ~ The Third Little Pig Antagonist ~ The Big Bad Wolf

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT Round/Dynamic characters- A character that is complex and well developed by the author. This character usually shows some sort of change throughout the course of the story. Flat/Static characters- In contrast, these types of characters remain the same throughout the entire story. The change in the character from the beginning to the ending of the story.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS How do readers understand a character?

Author’s Details Describe the character What does he/she look like? What does he/she sound like? Do they have a job/hobby?

CHARACTER’S OWN WORDS/ACTIONS What does the character say or do to help us better understand who they are? Do they steal? Help Others? What dialogue helps us to better understand? Example: Words: “Get over here right now!” –demanding, bossy Actions: She held out her glass and gave him a sip of water. –helpful, caring

OTHER CHARACTER’S WORDS/ACTIONS How can other characters help the reader understand the main character? How do the other characters talk to the main character? What actions occur between the main character and the minor character(s)? Words of other character: “You didn’t have to be so mean to me!” –main character is a bully? Actions of other characters: Jon walked quietly behind Linda(main charac.)—Linda is frightening?
