Layers of the Earth Brittany Vargo Kelly Swindler Kara Eckes
There are four layers of the earth: The crust The mantle The outer core The inner core
The Crust Outermost solid shell of planet Thinnest Layer 0-22 miles thick 0 degrees Celsius made up of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, basalt, diabase, and gabbro
The Mantle Second layer of the Earth Thickest layer miles thick 1000 degrees Celsius made up of plastic, magnesium, Iron, Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen
The Outer Core Third layer of the Earth miles thick 3700 degrees Celsius made of liquid metals: Iron, Nickel and contains Sulfur
The Inner Core Innermost layer of Earth miles thick 4300 degrees Celsius made of solid Iron
Activity The point of the activity is to build an example of the layers of the Earth. Items needed: - Plastic bottle - Ruler - Marker - Candy
Step #1 In step one, we will build the inner core of the Earth. The inner core is equal to 1 inch. Measure from the bottom of the plastic bottle up and then mark at 1 inch. Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.
Step # 2 In step 2, we will build the outer core of the Earth. The outer core is equal to 1¾ inch. Measure from the top of the inner core layer up and then mark 1¾ inch. Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.
Step #3 In step 3, we will build the mantle layer of the Earth. The mantle is equal to 3 inches. Measure from the top of the outer core and then mark 3 inches. Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.
Step #4 In step 4, we will build the crust of the Earth. The crust is equal to ¼ inch. Measure from the top of the mantle layer and then mark ¼ inch. Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.
