2 We live on the crust, which varies in thickness from about 11km under the ocean to about 33km under the continents. The earths crust is made up of a great variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The temperature increases with depth, the temperature is a range of 200°C to 400°C with the outer layer of the crust reaching 30°C on average.

3 The mantle is the largest layer of the earth. It is divided into two sections, the upper mantle and the lower mantle. It is 2900km thick. The upper mantle is solid and the upper layer and crust form a rigid layer of rock called the lithosphere. It is composed of very hot, rock and constitutes approximately 84% of the earths volume. The temperature in the upper mantle ranges from 500°C to 900°C and the lower mantle is 4000°C+.

4 The outer core is located 4828km beneath the surface of earth- it is the second last layer. It is about 2200 km thick. The core is made up of iron and nickel. The temperature of the core is extremely high so the iron and nickel metal are liquid. The outer core plays an immense role; it creates magnetic field. This happens as the core moves around the inner core- magnetism is created.

5 It is the last layer of earth. It is the smallest layer of the earth, even though it is 1250km thick. The outer core is mainly made of iron and nickel. Even though it is the hottest layer with 5000 degrees Celsius, it is not liquid like outer core; the immense pressure created the core to be a thick solid. inner core creates the earth’s magnetic field with outer core, shielding the surface from harmful radiation.
