Presentation transcript:

She is saying that there are many women that are very smart but they can’t do anything about it. Remember the comma plus BOYFANS rule! If a BOYFANS separates two independent clauses, you must use a comma in front of it! Also, “that” should be “who” because the antecedent is human. Plus, this sentence is not written in the Q/A format.

She wants an education she wants to be different from others. This sentence is run-on. Do you see where the first sentence ends and the second sentence begins?

The deal Lucy makes with her father is about her going to college, she wants to go but her father does not believe she should. This sentence is also a run-on. Can you see that a new sentence begins with “she”? It is a subject of the verb “wants.”

Lucy said women were reduced to a kind of slavery she means that women are being used. This sentence is also a run-on. We have two complete sentences run together. First sentence = Lucy said women were reduced to a kind of slavery. Second sentence = She means that women are being used.

She says she will never marry because she doesn’t want to be less than anyone. When you are answering questions in the Q/A format, you must not begin the statement with a pronoun. Your reader may not know who “she” is. Also, what adjective or noun does “less” modify? She is less what? Less purple? Less married? Less significant?

What Lucy means by “they were reduced to a kind of slavery” meant that they had to do whatever the men told them to do. Proofread to make sure your sentences make sense. DO NOT BEGIN ANSWERS WITH QUESTION WORDS. (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) It can be done correctly, but I haven’t taught you that sentence structure yet.

Lucy accomplishments were the first woman to earn a college degree in Massachusetts and wrote a paper and married Henry.

Lucy’s deal is she will pay her father back every cent. If he pays for her tuition. Watch out for those sentence fragments!!! This one could be avoided simply by removing the period and changing the upper case “If” to a lower case “if.” CORRECT: Lucy’s deal is that she will pay her father back every cent if he pays for her tuition.

Lucy went on to do after college wrote a women’s rights novel, trumpet call for the women’s right movement. Again, please read your sentences to make sure they make sense. The Q/A method is a great way to get you started on your way toward a perfectly written sentence, but don’t get so hung up on bringing your words into your answer that you lose sight of what you’re saying.

If the clause that begins with “because” is somewhere other than the beginning of the sentence, no comma is needed. WRONG: Lucy Stone says she will never marry, because she wants to get into college. RIGHT: Because she wants to get into college, Lucy Stone says she will never marry.

WRONG: Lucy said that she will never marry because, she has seen the way men treat women. RIGHT: Lucy said that she will never marry because she has seen the way men treat women.

AVOID SLANG!!!! I am your audience; you are not texting a message to your friend! dad mom wanna cuz gonna cause Papa

BE SURE TO ADDRESS THE PROMPT. If you are asked to describe the “accomplishments,” you must mention more than one! Be sure, too, that the list of accomplishments flows smoothly with the rest of the sentence.

Q/A format What was the deal Lucy made with her father? Lucy made a deal with her father to repay every cent that he spends on her tuition, even if it takes her until she is ninety years old.
