Contacts Maurizio Gemma Coordinator of VEDETTA ELT – Rome – Italy VEDETTA Vessel Enhanced DETection and TrAffic Acquisition Currently the maritime surveillance service is guaranteed mainly by a system of radars along the shores. Some problems of these systems are linked to the variability of performances of the system which can differ depending on the different targets (for instance, small size boats are difficult to identify). Also bad sea conditions and false alarms can cause limited performances. Besides such limitations, also the use of active technologies such as radars, represents a difficulty both in terms of emitted radiations and of environmental impact furthermore, unless strategically significant, their use needs to be justified since the costs are very high. The VEDETTA project (Vessel Enhanced DETection and TrAffic Acquisition) aims at developing an innovative system for radio-goniometric geo- localisation of boats, by using passive sensors, and including the necessary algorithms for data management. The equipment that is usually used during navigation (e.g. VHF-radio, mobile devices, satellite devices, AIS, etc) emit electromagnetic signals that can be detected by receivers. By using specific configurations of the receivers it is possible to geo-localise boats, using triangulation techniques of the emitted electromagnetic signals. Each boat leaves its electromagnetic signature that can be intercepted and analysed.
