Adaptation Adapted Sports Such as wheelchair basketball where the rules will be adapted Adapted equipment Such as football with ball bearings in the balls, allow visual impaired Types of adapted wheelchairs for specific events Classifications Used to ensure competitions are as fair as possible Athletics uses T for track and F for field events

Facilities Legal requirement that facilities cater for the disabled by… Access Doorways have to be wide enough for wheelchairs and ramps provided Parking Disabled bays available Provision Lifts giving access to upper floors, toilets provided and specific clubs or activities catering for the disabled should be available

Male Changing Room Female Changing Room Sports Hall Reception Stairs Car Park Making facilities accessible to all The Images Leisure and Activity Centre is in poor state of repair and there are plans to close it down. The good news is that Lottery funding has been obtained to help pay for a new centre in its place. One of the key failings of the old centre was that its design made it very inaccessible to many groups in the community. As you can see below, there were stairs from the car park to the reception and people had to go through the sports hall to reach the changing rooms.

Tasks to be completed in groups of 4 Task 1 Provide a sketch plan of the layout of a new centre that would make it more accessible to groups such as the disabled, elderly people, families with young children, etc. You should include all the facilities below but may also add in extra facilities such as disabled toilets as and where you see fit. Include annotations stating how you have made it accessible for all e.g.. a supporting lift into he pool for the disabled Think carefully how a person would access each facility as they move around the leisure centre. 1 multi-purpose sports hall 2 aerobics/dance studios A fitness and weights room Male changing rooms Female changing rooms A crèche Car parking A reception area Swimming pool Task 2 List the other services that could be provided when the centre is built for groups such as the partially sighted, hearing impaired, wheelchair users etc. Task 3 List any sporting equipment that is designed for the disabled which would be used in the leisure centre e.g ball bearings within a football

Task 3 Present your design to the whole class and explain all the other physical features and services you have included and how you have met the requirements for the disabled.
