Session Outcomes Define the term “induction” Describe the induction process as a means of socialising a new employee Discuss the role of human resource policies and rules in an organisation;

Provide examples of human resource policies and briefly describe their contents; Discuss the role of the disciplinary code in guiding employee conduct and behaviour

Discuss the role of the grievance procedure in addressing employee dissatisfaction Compile an employee handbook using provided guidelines.

What is induction? Organizational socialization assists employees in gaining an understanding of what is required of them to get ahead in the organization

The purpose of Induction Assisting employees to settle in sooner Assisting employees to become more. productive reducing initial fear and uncertainty

Ensure that employees adjust to the new environment sooner Reduce staff turnover

Avoid the creation of unrealistic career goals Saving time for supervisors

What should be included in the induction Program?

A review of the organization ( Information regarding culture and values, its vision and mission as well as products and services Policies and procedures as well as rules and regulations( leave, Compensation – reference to basic salary, overtime pay for public holidays etc. Health and safety issues

Labor relations - code of conduct as well as grievance procedure, termination of contract etc Facilities such as location of cafeteria and restrooms Influence of economic factors on the company ( absenteeism )

Function of the department that the member will be part off Introduction of other employees

Stages of induction Anticipatory (induction stage ) Encounter (Orientation stage ) The setting in (Socialization) stage

Human Resource Policies, Procedures and Rules The employee handbook acts as a communication tool between the employer and the employee Please see the link in the manual (page 45)

Employee handbook Expresses expectations of the organization It indicates to employees what they can expect in return The employee handbook contains policies and procedures and rules They Provide broad guidelines within which organizational issues can be dealt with
