Presentation transcript:

 Relationships are formed through self disclosure.  Self disclosure involves meeting some expectations.  Self disclosure always involves risk.

 Self disclose the right information and you’ll gain their interest.  Self-disclose the wrong information and you don’t stand a chance.  Self disclosure is not just what you say but HOW YOU SAY IT.

 Disclosing that you have a college degree and then having spelling and grammatical errors.  Disclosing that you are organized, but your resume has no logical flow.  Not disclosing a specific resume objective that relates to the organization.  Not using appropriate words or phrases that are associated with the position.  Not using an professional address.

 Before you write, PREPARE yourself  Do a personal inventory of your strengths and weaknesses  What sets you apart?  Assets and talents  Experience  Background  Interests  What could disqualify you?

 Before you write, PREPARE for the position.  What exactly are they looking for?  Training  Experience  Personal skills  What vocabulary is related to the field?  Buzz-words  Persons  Theories

 Objective:  Make it specific  Make it impressive  Make it clear  Be career and not job oriented

 Your educational record is most important for your first position.  Reverse chronological order  Begin with your college degree, not high school  Only include GPA if it is impressive  If you are short on work experience, include titles of courses that relate to the position.

 Work experiences  Make them relevant to the position.  Make them unique so they can set you apart from the crowd.  Leadership  Professional Organizations  Community Service

Slide 10  Studies of factors that create favorable impressions  Job-related work experiences88%  Leadership roles in student organizations86%  Paid, job related experiences79%  Member of pre-professional organizations73%

 Mechanics of Resumes  Make your resume easy to review.  White space  Different fonts  ONE PAGE (unless you have extensive experience in the field.)  Use many eyes to review  Terms and labels are critical in scannable resumes.  There is no simple formula for creating resumes.

 The Cover Letter  Design and target letters to specific positions and organizations  To a specific person  Brief (Letter will become talking points for the interview.)  Explain WHY you are interested.  Avoid beginning the first paragraph with “I”  Do not repeat your resume.  Communicate enthusiasm  NO ERRORS!!!

 Revise your resume for every job you apply for.  Collect insider information if possible.  Always follow up with a thank you note that is hand written.
