Nouns: Are they masculine or feminine? This packet is going to help you to remember how to tell if a noun is masculine or feminine- even if it is not a person! Pages 28 and 32

all All French, all nouns have a gender. YEP! You got it! Even things have a gender! It will be very important for you to know the gender (masculine or feminine) of all nouns that you learn. The only way you will remember is my knowing the little tiny word, called an “article” that is placed before the noun when you learn it in your vocabulary. In your homework you translated many nouns. You may have noticed these small words that came before them. Those words are “un” “une” “le” and “la”

UN and UNE The articles are found before NOUNS ONLY. These mean “a” If a noun is MASCULINE, you will see “un” before it. If a noun is FEMININE. You will see ”une” before it.

Lets find some masculine nouns. Lets look at page 45 in the textbook. List the nouns on that page that are masculine: How do you know that these nouns are masculine? ________________________________________________________________________-

Lets find some feminine nouns. Lets look at page 140 in the textbook. List the nouns on that page that are feminine: How do you know that these nouns are feminine?

LE and LA The articles are found before NOUNS ONLY. These mean “the” If a noun is MASCULINE, you will see “le” before it. If a noun is FEMININE. You will see ”la” before it. If a noun begins with a vowel, you will see a contraction of both “ l’ “

Using le and la… Go back to the nouns you chose on page 45. Take those masculine nouns and change the article so that it means “the” and that particular noun: How do you know that these nouns are masculine?

Using le and la… Go back to the feminine nouns you found on page 140 Take those feminine nouns and change the article so that it means “the” and that particular noun: How do you know that these nouns are feminine?

Using the glossary in the text for translation Now write the French and English of the nouns you chose for each exercise in this packet
