Language Acquisition Stages Stage1 - Pre-Production Stage2 - Early Production Stage3 - Speech Emergence Stage4 - Intermediate Fluency Stage5 - Fluent English Proficient (Advanced)

Stage1: Pre-Production Minimal comprehension No verbal production Receptive to English when listening, matching, moving, choosing, pointing, drawing, miming, role-playing silently

Stage2: Early Production Limited comprehension Minimal verbal production Receptive to and expressive with English when naming, labeling, listing, categorizing, and responding with one or two words

Stage3: Speech Emergence Good comprehension Many pronunciation & grammatical errors Produces simple sentences (limited vocabulary) Receptive to and expressive with English when describing, retelling, defining, summarizing explaining, comparing and contrasting

Stage4: Intermediate Fluency Excellent comprehension Near-native speech Few pronunciation & grammatical errors Receptive to and expressive with English when giving opinions, justifying, analyzing, examining, synthesizing, debating, reading, writing, and evaluating

Stage5: Fluent English Proficiency Advanced Able to communicate orally and in writing with fluency and accuracy comparable to native English speakers of similar age and academic schooling experiences
