EUROPEAN STANDARDS AND LEGISLATIVE REGULATIONS CONCERNING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN COMPARISON TO THE LAW EXISTING IN POLAND

All of the polish legal acts concerning environmental protection are based on and are strictly connected to european directives.

WATER CONSERVATION

UE: reducing the discharge of heavy metals, detergents, pesticides into the water POLAND: Requirements in this regard have been implemented to the Polish Law.

URBAN WASTE WATER TREATMENT

UE: building sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants - monitoring the discharge of treated wastewater and water quality in reservoirs where wastewater is kept.

POLAND: In Poland, the requirements of the Directive have been estabilished. Last time limit for the construction of sewerage systems falls on

RESIDUES

waste oils are not to be placed in the environment - total ban on discarding waste that are flammable, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, used tires, liquid waste or hospital waste

POLAND: Detailed regulations have been released, but there might be some difficulties in implementation them into a real life (ex. Due to technological underdevelopment of Poland in relation to the EU).

AIR PROTECTION

UE: - restriction of the concentration of SO2, the lead and nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and benzene in the atmosphere - the requirements for acceptable levels of emissions of pollutants into the air from large combustion plants

POLAND: Polish law does not have strict requirements for emissions of pollutants into the air from large combustion installation - Time for the implementation of the requirements relating to other legislative acts has been extended to 2022

GMO – GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS

UE: In the European Law the following issues have been settled: *the release of genetically modified organisms into the environment *genetically modified food and fodder *shipments of genetically modified organisms

POLAND: The legislative acts were developed based on the relevant EU directives.
