Ground Water.
Chapter 9: Water Moving Underground More than 97 percent of all water on Earth is in the ocean as salt water. Glaciers – of the little amount of fresh.
Distribution of Earth’s Water:  3% fresh water  97% salt water (oceans) 
This volume of water has been recycled ever since.

 Last week we discussed how run-off can occur two different ways:  Surface Run-off – water flowing on the surface to streams, rivers and oceans.  Subsurface.

Presentation transcript:

LAB TITLE : POROSITY AND PERMEABILITY

POROSITY - The amount of open pore space between particles of a material.

PERMEABILITY -The ability of rock and soil to allow water to pass through

IMPERMEABLE not - Rock materials that do not allow water to pass through.

WATER RETENTION - Water retained by the rock

INFILTRATION - Process of water moving down into the ground beneath the rock particles.

GROUNDWATER -Liquid water that has infiltrated the ground and lies beneath the land surface.

SORTED -Separation of particles by equal size. Ex. Sandstone

UNSORTED -Separation of particles by unequal sizes Ex. Glacial deposits

TICKET OUT THE DOOR What three factors determine the ability of a rock or soil to allow water to pass between particles?
