CIRCULATORY SYSTEM What is really in our blood?

Warm Up 10/26/11 1.What are the 4 parts of the circulatory system? 2. Which of the following is NOT a blood vessel a)Connective Tissue b) Capillary c)Vein d)Artery 3. You do not tell your heart to move. Therefore it is a __________ muscle. a)voluntary b) involuntary 4. According to the order of things in your body, your heart is a ______________. a)Cell b)Tissue c) Organ d) Organ System e) Whole organism

Questions Answered Here are some answers to Friday’s questions 1. What is the average heart beat per minute? This question is referring to a persons “heart rate”. Heart rate can vary as the body's need to absorb oxygen and excrete carbon dioxide changes, such as during exercise or sleep. The typical resting heart rate for an adult is between beats per minute. When you are asleep or exercising, this number may go down or speed up. If your heart beats are out of this range it could be extremely dangerous! exercise

Questions Answered Continued… 1. Does your heart grow as you grow older? This is a tricky question as it depends on an individuals health and lifestyle. Here’s the answer according to the Mayo Clinic: What's happening. Over time, your heart muscle becomes less efficient — working harder to pump the same amount of blood through your body. In addition, your blood vessels lose some of their elasticity and hardened fatty deposits may form on the inner walls of your arteries (atherosclerosis). These changes make your arteries stiffer, causing your heart to work even harder to pump blood through them. This can lead to high blood pressure (hypertension) and other heart problems

What we are learning today… Our objective for today is: To learn the 4 parts of the blood and what job each part does. Our essential question is: How do the various parts of our blood help us to maintain homeostasis? Why do we need to learn this? We need to know what jobs each of our blood cells do in order to understand what our blood does. Different cells do different jobs in order to keep the body healthy and balanced. If not, we could not function.

Parts of the blood There are 4 parts of the blood: 1. Plasma 2. White blood cells 3. Red blood cells 4. Platelets Copy this in your notebook now!

On your own  In your notebook write down what you think each of the four parts does. (3 minutes)  In pairs discuss your responses when I say go. (3 minutes)  When I say freeze, we will stop discussing and share our responses whole class. (4 minutes)

Were going to Make Blood! 1. Draw the chart below in your notebook: This should only take 2 minutes! Part of the blood Match the item with the part of the blood What is its job?How does the part help you maintain homeostasis? What would happen if your body did not have this part of your blood? Platelets Plasma Red Blood Cells White Blood Cells

Were Making Blood 2. One person from your group will come and get materials. 3. In your group you will assemble the 4 parts into your actual blood as I give you instructions. If you touch the items without my directions you are disqualified and you loose your seat!

Making blood continued  You will fill out the first two sections with my help within your groups.  We will review the first 3 boxes as guided practice

Clean Up  Before we start independent practice my room needs to be clean.  Throw stuff away quickly and find your seat!

Independent Practice  We will sit individually and silently.  You will answer the last two columns of your chart. Once you are done answer the following questions on my side of your notebook. 1. Why is it important to have white blood cells in the body? What do white blood cells to help humans maintain homeostasis? 2. Why is it important to have red blood cells in our body? Why would it be impossible for a person to maintain homeostasis without red blood cells? 3. Why would you bleed to death without platelets? 4. Make one connection between the parts of the blood and the skeletal. How are they related and why?

Warm Up 10/27/11 Answer the following questions: 1. What are the 4 parts of your blood? 2. Why do we need platelets? What do they do in our bodies? 3. What would happen if we did not have white blood cells? 4. How do our cells get their oxygen and nutrients? What would happen if they did not get what they needed?
