BOULWARE’S STANDARDS-BASED GRADING September 9, 2015

 Boulware is using a new way to grade: STANDARDS-BASED GRADING.  Many schools and districts around the nation are starting to use this way of grading.  Teachers report on the progress that students are making towards mastering each Common Core/state standard. THE NEW WAY TO GRADE

 We use Common Core standards for Language Arts and Math. We use Florida State Standards for all other subjects. These are available to see via our website.  Teachers lay out a plan to ensure that they cover each standard (and most standards are covered more than once) by the end of the year. Our goal is for students to master every standard by the end of the year. THE STANDARDS

 CCS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 READING THE STANDARDS Common Core State Standard Subject: English/Language Arts Strand: Literacy Sub-strand: Reading: Literature Grade Level. Standard#

 Overall progress for each standard is measured on a 0-4 scale (this is typical for SBG): GRADES

 Report cards will go home the week students return from their 2 week break. A final report card will be available after the last day of school, which will include the entire year.  Report cards will be very detailed- you will be able to see all of the standards that were taught/assessed during each term and the average amount of progress made on each standard. This is meant to help you understand exactly what your child has mastered and what they may struggle with.  Report cards will be broken down into:  Subject  Standard REPORT CARDS

EXAMPLE

 Overall mastery for each standard will be based on a formula known as “decaying average”  Basically, newer assessments automatically "count more" in the overall score. This ensures that as students master standards more and more they are able to get their overall mastery closer to 4. HOW IS OVERALL MASTERY CALCULATED?
