This can be seen when Cherry tells Ponyboy that things are rough all over (55). Through this comment, she is letting Ponyboy know that even though she is wealthy and has a great future ahead of her, she still has problems. Perhaps the best example of this theme is seen when when Cherry and Ponyboy are talking in the parking lot. Ponyboy asks Cherry if she can see the sunset on the westside. When she responds, he answers, “You can see it from the eastside, too” (99). The quote lets shows that Ponyboy has realized that even though they are from two different classes, they both feel emotions and see the same things in life. These two examples show that the theme, people are the same underneath, even if they come from different backgrounds, is see in the book.
