Career Planning Dave Taylor

Objectives for Success Employee driven – own your future! Management supported Mentor supported Opportunity awareness Goodness of fit and timing Decision making backdrop

Visioning – 2 and 5 years out Describe yourself – who do I want to be Describe your environment – lifestyle Describe how you want others to see you Some attributes are independent of timing Separate dependant items Other ’ s assistance is often required Recruit a mentor to help Use the assembled list as a “ sales ” tool to solicit required assistance

Decision Making, Focus, and Risk It is common to be scared of excluding a valuable, unseen opportunity Others can ’ t help you get there if they don ’ t know what you want There is personal risk in declaring a dream, but the risk is well worth taking It ’ s common to think “ I just don ’ t know!!! ” Think about it, and decide on something

Dare to Dream – and Go After It! If you don ’ t know where you ’ re going, don ’ t be surprised if you end up somewhere that isn ’ t that terrific. You might fail and that ’ s scary. Get over it Remember, you might succeed!

JUST DO IT!! Write something and see if it fits Erase some and write more Erase some more and write some more Keep going until it “ feels like me ” Get a trusted friend or mentor to check if it “ sounds like me ”

What Next? With endpoint in mind, start talking, start walking Promote your ideas in the area of interest Network with others who are already there Learn as much as you can about where you want to go Let others know of your interests Let others help you get there

Support Make connections that make sense Building a path to your goal must have some coherency If you want to become a pilot, starting with a job at the airport is a coherent first step
