LETS MEASURE WEATHER!

Meteorology  The study of weather  Meteorologists are scientists who study meteorology on a daily basis

Vocabulary Review Weather – the happenings in the atmosphere at a specific time Atmosphere – the air that surrounds the earth Temperature – the measure of how hot or cold something is Front – a place where two air masses of different temperatures meet Wind – the movement of air

What my name?

Thermometer  A Thermometer is a tool for measuring temperature

Anemometer  Meteorologists use anemometers to measure wind speed in one area.  With this data they can determine how quickly a storm, or weather system will travel to one area.

Rain Gauge  A rain gauge is a tool for measuring the amount of rain that falls in a given period of time

Barometer  A barometer is used to measure air pressure.  Forecasters use barometers.  When the air pressure is rising, good weather is on the way.  When air pressure is falling, the weather is about to get stormy.

Snow Guage  A snow gauge is used to measure the amount of snow in a given period of time

Wind Vane  A wind vane is a tool for measuring wind direction.  Knowing the direction of the wind helps meteorologists determine in which direction a storm or weather system will travel
