Reading Counts Incentive Program Manatee Middle School

What is Reading Counts? Many middle school students are already familiar with the Reading Counts program from elementary school. Students read books of their choice that fall under the Reading Counts program. They take a 10 question quiz when they have finished their book, using the Scholastic Reading Counts application at school. If students earn at least a 70%, they have passed the quiz and earned points.

How many points will I earn for each quiz I pass? It depends. Books that have more reading required and/or have a more difficult reading level (Lexile), earn more points. As an example, Divergent is worth 25 points, whereas the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid is worth 7 points. This is because Divergent has over 100,000 words, whereas Diary of a Wimpy Kid has 18,500 words. (Believe it or not, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has a higher Lexile at 950 vs. Divergent’s Lexile of 700.)

How do I know if a book has a Reading Counts quiz? There are a few ways to find out: Some library books have an RC label on the spine. You can check Destiny- some books are listed as RC. Reading Counts website- The Reading Counts website will also tell you how many points the book is worth. There are 2 computers set up today with this website so you can check your books as you go.

Class Prizes Each quarter, the 2 nd period class with the most number of RC points will be awarded with a pizza party in the media center during lunch. Classes cannot win more than once per year.

Individual Prizes Any student earning at Reading Counts points will receive a Scratch n Sniff bookmark points will earn a McDonald’s coupon points will earn a free paperback book points will be entered in a prize drawing, which will include: Spirit shirts Hardcover books Small gift cards 150+ points will be entered in a prize drawing for a Nook e- reader (1 per quarter). Anyone who doesn’t win the Nook will be entered in the 100+ drawing (see above).

Grand Individual Prize The student with the most Reading Counts points at the end of the school year (mid-May) will receive a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card. Students who earn the most for their grade will receive a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. Both the grade winner and the school winner? You’ll get both gift cards for $75 total.

Sunshine State Reader Books Students who read at least 3 Sunshine State Reader books by March 1 st will be eligible to vote for their favorite Sunshine State Reader book. Voting will take place in the media center and will include cookies and lemonade. Any student reading 7 or more Sunshine State Reader books by May 1 st will be eligible for a party in the media center with snacks, games, and prizes.

All prizes will be announced on the morning news!
