Physical Education Structures, Strategies & Composition: Basketball

The Fast Break One of the forwards rebounds the ball The forward passes to the point guard The point guard dribbles up the middle of the court The two forwards fill the lanes, running up the court The point guard passes to one of the forwards The forward scores a layup

Forward Point guard Forward The Fast Break

Gathering information on performance So far we have used 2 methods to gather data on our performance: These were: General observation schedule (G.O.S) Focussed observation schedule (F.O.S)

General Observation Schedule (G.O.S) A G.O.S was used to investigate performance and identify strengths and weaknesses in the game. A G.O.S was used as they are easy to fill in and understand. They also provide a permanent record of my performance. This allows results from future schedule’s to be compared to check for improvement.

The G.O.S was completed during a 3v3 match against players of similar ability 12 fast breaks were analysed for each team General Observation Schedule (G.O.S)

The G.O.S had aspects of the fast break along the top, these were: ReboundRebound Outlet passOutlet pass Dribble down the middleDribble down the middle Pass to scoring playerPass to scoring player Basket scoredBasket scored Down the side were the numbers 1 – 12 for each fast break General Observation Schedule (G.O.S)

To complete the G.O.S. another team who had a good knowledge of the fast break in basketball watched our team’s performance of the fast break during games. A tick was placed beside the part of the fast break if it was performed successfully and a cross if it was performed unsuccessfully. General Observation Schedule (G.O.S)

Focussed Observation Schedule (F.O.S.) After identifying the pass to scoring player as our main weakness an F.O.S. was used to analyse the pass in more detail. The F.O.S. allowed me to look at the pass in more detail to discover what needed improvement.

Focussed Observation Schedule (F.O.S.) The F.O.S. was completed by another team, whilst we played a 3v3 game against opponents of similar ability 10 fast breaks were analysed A tick was placed beside the parts of the fast break which were successful and a cross beside those which were not successful.

Focussed Observation Schedule (F.O.S.) The F.O.S. split the pass into the timing and weight of the pass The timing of the pass – too early or too late? The weight of the pass – too light or too hard?

G.O.S. & F.O.S. Both of these methods of data collection identified my strengths and weaknesses in the fast break This will allow me to plan a training programme to improve my weaknesses

Exam Question: Describe, in detail, a structure, strategy or composition that you have used. Describe how you gathered information about your performance within the structure, strategy or composition Explain how your strengths and weaknesses affected the structure, strategy or composition
