1.Do you think it is important to protect cultural heritage? Why or why not ? 2. Do you have any suggestions on how to protect it?

Fast-reading What does the title Lost Civilizations mean? It means ancient buildings, cultures and countries that no longer existed.

1. Where are Pompeii and Loulan? 2. What is the main similarity between the two cities? 3. What was Loulan buried beneath? Pomeii is in Italy and Loulan is in China. Both of them became lost civilizations long ago. Loulan was buried beneath the sand.

How well did you understand the details in the diary? Read it again carefully and answer the following questions. Careful-reading

1.What happened to Pompeii in August AD 79? A volcano erupted and lava, ash and rocks poured out of it onto the surrounding countryside. Many people in Pompeii were buried alive, and so was the city.

It was discovered in the 18th century when a farmer found a stone with writing on it. People started to dig in the area for treasure, which caused much damage. Thus, in 1860, the area was put under government protection so it could be preserved and studied. 2. How was Pompeii discovered?

3. What were the stepping stones along the road in Pompeii used for? With these stones, people did not have to step in the mud on rainy days. 4. Why was Loulan an important city about 2,000 years ago? Because it was a stopping point on the famous Silk Road between the East and the West.

5. According to the last sentence, how did the author feel about the loss of Loulan? She felt that it was a pity.

1.Is it useful for people to study things from the past? Why or why not? 2. What can we do to make people have the sense of protecting our civilizations?

What do you know about Maya Civilization?

The Maya is noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre- Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Pre-Classic period (c BC to AD 250), many Maya cities reached their highest state of development during the Classic period (c. AD 250 to 900), and

continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. Advances such as writing, epigraphy, and the calendar did not originate with the Maya; however, their civilization fully developed them.

The 10 Most Intriguing Mysteries of Lost Civilizations 1.Egyptian Treasures in the Grand Canyon 2.Age of the Pyramids and Sphinx 3.Nazca Lines (found in a desert about 200 miles south of Lima, Peru) 4.Location of Atlantis (Plato wrote about the beautiful, technologically advanced continent-sized island back in 370 B.C.)

The 10 Most Intriguing Mysteries of Lost Civilizations 5. Mayan Calendar 6. Japan's Underwater Ruins (off the southern shore of Okinawa) 7. Voyages to the Americas (People had "discovered" the continent long before Columbus. The truth is we know very little about early, far-traveling cultures.)

The 10 Most Intriguing Mysteries of Lost Civilizations 8. Sunken City off Cuba In May 2001, a Canadian company revealed something unexpected and quite amazing 2,200 feet down: stones laid out in a geometric pattern that looked very much like the ruins of a city.

The 10 Most Intriguing Mysteries of Lost Civilizations 9. Mu or Lemuria Nearly as famous as Atlantis is the legendary lost world of Mu, sometimes call Lemuria, an Eden-like tropical paradise located somewhere in the Pacific that sunk, along with all of its beautiful inhabitants, thousands of years ago.

The 10 Most Intriguing Mysteries of Lost Civilizations 10. Caribbean Underwater Pyramids One of the most intriguing tales of the discovery of ruins of a lost civilization is the story of Dr. Ray Brown. In 1970, while diving near the Bari Islands in the Bahamas, Dr. Brown claimed to have come across a pyramid "shining like a mirror" that he estimated was 120 feet tall.

Enjoy a song Yesterday Once More. When I was young, I ’ d listen to the radio, Waiting for my favorite songs When they played I ’ d sing along , It made me smile Those were such happy times , And not so long ago How I wondered where they ’ d gone But they ’ re back again, Just like a long lost friend All the songs I love so well Every sha-la-la-la Every wo-wo still shines, Every shinga-linga-ling,

That they ’ re starting to sing so fine When they get to the part Where he is breaking her heart , It can really make me cry , Just like before , It ’ s yesterday once more Looking back on how it was In years gone by , And the good time that I had Makes today seem rather sad So much has changed It was songs of love That I would sing to them , And I ’ d memorize each word , Those old melodies still sound so good to me ,

As they melt the years away Every sha-la-la-la Every wo-wo still shines, Every shinga-linga-ling, That they ’ re starting to sing so fine All my best memories Come back clearly to me Some can even make me cry , Just like before , It ’ s yesterday once more Every sha-la-la-la Every wo-wo still shines, Every shinga-linga-ling, That they ’ re starting to sing so fine
