New Year In Russia

For almost all Russians, there is no other celebration more popular or more exciting than New Year. Russians think this holiday is the most domestic and sincere holiday.

In Russia the streets and squares, cafés and restaurants, shops and enterprises are decorated with sparkling christmas lights, New Year’s toys, adored fir- trees and figures of Ded Moroz and his granddaughter – Sneguroschka.

Ded Moroz is very popular in modern Russia. Ded Moroz is a magician, he lives in Lapland and in Bolshoy Ustyug. Ded Moroz is usually dressed in a heel- long light or dark blue (rare red) fur coat and semi- round fur hat lavishly adorned of gold or silver, valenki (felt boots) and mittens. Every city, town or settlement has its major decorated fir- tree in the central square, where the New Year’s carnival shows, merry performances and fascinating fireworks take place the whole night.

The New Year is a traditional family holiday, when relatives and friends join together to wish each other a happy and prosperous coming year. However some people prefer to celebrate this night in the clubs, restaurants, and dancehalls, which organize many special programs, carnivals, games, and entertainments dealing with New Year

New Year Popular Believes Russian saying asserts: “As you meet the New Year, so you will spend it.” That is why Russian people celebrate New Year in the hearty company of friends and family at the beautifully set table with a lot of dishes. Russians believe that the wishes made on the New Year’s Night will surely come true.
